MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin's grueling four-game road trip over the span of 10 days concludes in front of a nationally televised audience when the Skyhawk men's basketball team collides against Western Illinois. Tipoff on ESPNU is set for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Through the first three legs of the season-long road swing, UT Martin has held the home squads to 39.2 percent shooting (80-for-204), including a 29.8 percent clip (25-of-84) from three-point range. The trio of Jordan Sears (team-highs of 22.0 points, 4.3 assists per game), Jacob Crews (15.7 points, team-best 10.3 rebounds per outing) and Issa Muhammad (10.3 points per game on 58.3 percent shooting) have each excelled during the road stretch.
The Skyhawks (14-10, 7-4 Ohio Valley Conference) saw their road winning streak come to an end on Tuesday at Little Rock, which was UT Martin's third game in six days. The trio of Crews, Koby Jeffries and Jalen Myers each led the way with 12 points apiece but the Skyhawks could not overcome a season-low scoring tally in a 77-57 setback.
UT Martin will go for a season split against league newcomer Western Illinois as the Leathernecks claimed a 73-64 win at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center back on Jan. 11. Crews (21 points, 10 rebounds), Sears (13 points) and Myers (10 points) all scored in double figures for the Skyhawks but Western Illinois went on a 16-0 run at one point during the first half and never looked back.
The Leathernecks (15-9, 8-3) are coming off a 63-60 setback against Little Rock on Thursday. In that game, Quinlan Bennett had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) but the visiting Trojans overcame a 10-point halftime deficit thanks to a 13-0 run that started with 5:18 remaining in the contest.
Earlier this season at UT Martin, JJ Kakalon (17 points), Ryan Myers (16), James Dent, Jr. (15) and Bennett (11) provided the bulk of the scoring while Drew Cisse narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.
