MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team starts off the last week of the 2023-24 regular season at home against Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29 (following the women's game as the backend of a doubleheader).
The Skyhawks (19-10, 12-4 OVC) moved into a three-way tie alongside Morehead State and Little Rock for first place in the OVC standings last weekend. Victors in nine of its last 10 games, UT Martin has already matched its win total from last season and has also won five consecutive contests - the longest winning streak in head coach Ryan Ridder's three-year tenure.
The Skyhawks are riding the hot hands of Jacob Crews and Jordan Sears, who have played lights-out down the stretch. Crews has won back-to-back National Player of the Week awards and is averaging 30.0 points and 9.3 rebounds over his last four games - shooting 56.1 percent from the floor (including 45.2 percent from beyond the three-point line) in that span. Meanwhile, Sears is also averaging 30.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists with 12 three-pointers and an 86.5 free throw percentage (32-for-37) in his last three contests.
UT Martin is going for the season sweep of the Golden Eagles as the Skyhawks won by an 81-73 margin on the road back on Dec. 30. Sears' 22 points led five UT Martin scorers in double figures as Crews (17), KK Curry (16), Justus Jackson (11) and Issa Muhammad (10) also had big days offensively.
Tennessee Tech (10-19, 5-11 OVC) has won three of its last five games with both setbacks coming by single digits. The Golden Eagles defeated Eastern Illinois by a 75-67 margin last Saturday as Rodney Johnson, Jr.'s 18 points (on 7-of-10 shooting) off the bench paced an offense that shot 52 percent (13-for-25) from three-point range.
Jayvis Harvey (22 points), Diante Wood (18), Kyle Layton (13) and Johnson (13) each scored in double figures against the Skyhawks earlier this season.
