The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team continues its road swing through the Show Me State with a trip down I-55 for an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tipoff from the Show Me Center is slated for 1:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (12-14, 9-6 OVC) used a strong second half to surge past Lindenwood on the road in Thursday evening's matchup, posting a 65-56 victory. With the win, the Skyhawks not only clinched a berth in the upcoming OVC Basketball Championship field but also guaranteed the 14th consecutive season with at least a .500 winning percentage in OVC play since 2010.
UT Martin has steadily ascended the OVC league standings with its impressive play on the road this season. The squad currently sits in a tie for third place in the conference standings while sitting one game out of second place after winning four of their last six games. The Skyhawks have proved to be bad guests this season by posting a 6-2 record in opposing league venues.
In Thursday night's contest, UT Martin rattled off a 65-56 victory at Lindenwood after outscoring the home squad by 10 in the second half. The Skyhawks pounded the post where they scored 36 points in the paint while placing four players in double figures. Sophomore Anaya Brown led all scorers with 24 points in the game while adding seven rebounds. Meanwhile, Cape Girardeau native Lexi Rubel finished with six points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Freshmen Kenley McCarn (12 points) and Norah Clark (11 points) also reached double figures in the win.
Southeast Missouri (8-18, 5-10 OVC) is fighting for the final spot in the OVC Basketball Championship as the squad is currently tied for the eighth – and final – seed with Tennessee State. The Redhawks have lost seven of their last nine games but split the last two weekends before falling to Little Rock (61-48) on Thursday evening in front of a national tv audience. SEMO features two players who average in double figures with the pair of Alecia Doyle (13.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg) and Jaliyah Green (13.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg).
Saturday's contest marks the 80th meeting between the two long-time rivals as UT Martin holds a 46-33 series advantage. The Skyhawks have won eight of their last 11 matchups against the Redhawks while splitting last season's series – with each team winning on its home court. In the previous showdown back on Jan. 25 in Martin, the Skyhawks limited the Redhawks to just 20 points in the second half en route to a 52-44 home victory.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
