ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – In its first official competition since last October, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team got off to a blazing start at the WGV Collegiate before darkness crept up on the King & Bear Golf Course.
The Skyhawks were the Round 1 leaders via an even-par 288 (E), which led IUPUI by two strokes in a competitive 18-team field. The field was well into the second round as most squads lacked 2-3 holes from completing the day before play was suspended at 6:10 p.m. local time.
Dax Isbell's 67 (-5) was the second best score in the tournament through 18 holes, trailing only IUPUI's Taylor Gardner by one stroke. The sophomore out of Cumming, Ga. carded all six of his birdies in an 11-hole stretch and shot just one bogey through the entire round.
Jacob Uehlein and Luke Caldwell were each tied for 15th place after Round 1, accounting for even-par 72's. Uehlein managed three of his four birdies on the front-nine while Caldwell wrapped up his morning with three straight birdies, giving him a total of five in the round.
Completing UT Martin's lineup was Grant Phillips (77, one birdie) and Ethan Ray (81, two birdies and the team's lone eagle of the day to complete an even-par effort on the back-nine).
Playing as an individual, Bryson Morrell reeled off nine consecutive pars in the middle of his round before settling for an 81.
Round 2 will resume tomorrow at 7 a.m. CT with continuous play of Round 3 starting at approximately 7:30 a.m. CT. The duo of Uehlein and Caldwell each only have three holes left while Isbell, Phillips, Ray and Morrell all have two holes remaining in before moving into the third and final round.
