MARTIN, Tenn. – Victors in six of its last seven outings, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad plays host to Ohio Valley Conference-leading Morehead State tomorrow in a showcase of two of the league's best teams. The game serves as a "Code Orange" contest as tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m., serving as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's game.
With five regular season games remaining, the Skyhawks (16-10, 9-4 OVC) are two games back of the Eagles in the league standings. UT Martin is currently knotted with Western Illinois and Little Rock in second place as March Madness approaches.
Since an 84-66 setback at Morehead State on Jan. 18 that left the Skyhawks at 3-3 in OVC play, UT Martin has gone on an extended run - going 3-0 at home and 3-1 on the road. The Skyhawks have won their three games inside the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center by an average of 14.7 points per outing during this current monthlong stretch.
On Thursday, UT Martin rode a trio of superstar performances in a 77-68 win over Southern Indiana. Jacob Crews accumulated a game-high 32 points while Issa Muhammad had 14 points and 20 rebounds - just one board shy of the program's NCAA Division I record. Jordan Sears (19 points, career-best eight rebounds, seven assists) also excelled for the Skyhawks, becoming just the second player in school history to reach 500-plus points and 100-plus assists in a single season.
Playing all season without injured OVC Preseason Player of the Year Mark Freeman, Morehead State (20-6, 11-2 OVC) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped on Thursday with a narrow 69-68 loss at Little Rock. In that game, Riley Minix - who scored a game-high 26 points against UT Martin back on Jan. 18 - collected game-high tallies of 29 points and 15 rebounds. Kalil Thomas (19 points, including five treys) and Drew Thelwell (13 points, game-high eight assists) also paced the Eagles.
A five-time OVC Player of the Week in 2023-24, Minix is averaging 22.9 points (on 61.8 percent shooting) and 10.1 rebounds per game in conference play.
