UT MARTIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOSTS LEAGUE-LEADING SOUTHERN INDIANA ON THURSDAY
2/14/2024 11:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team is scheduled to take on Ohio Valley Conference leader Southern Indiana in the lone regular season matchup of the season on Thursday, Feb. 15. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is slated 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Thursday's contest also serves as the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Game for the Skyhawk women's basketball team. Prior to the contest, our Skyhawk student-athletes will invite their favorite UT Martin faculty and staff members to join them on the floor for starting lineups.
The Skyhawks (10-13, 7-5 OVC) return home after an impressive four-game road swing in which the squad posted a 3-1 record after knocking off Eastern Illinois, SIUE and Little Rock in three straight games. In the team's most recent contest, UT Martin fell behind early but fought back to tie the game before ultimately running out of gas, dropping the road trip finale at Western Illinois by a final margin of 71-61.
For the second straight week, a member of the Skyhawk roster was named OVC Freshman of the Week as star guard Kenley McCarn recorded her sixth career freshman honor. McCarn averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 58.6 percent from the floor. Sophomore forward Anaya Brown also had yet another big week after narrowly missing out on averaging a double-double while tallying 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game – including matching her previous career-high with 25 points against WIU.
UT Martin hopes the strong road trip parlays into a strong homestand as the Skyhawks welcome Southern Indiana and Morehead State into the Elam Center this week. While the Skyhawks have posted a 101-22 home record against OVC foes during the Kevin McMillan Era, the squad is just 3-6 overall on Pat Summitt Court this season.
Southern Indiana boasts an impressive 16-6 overall mark while sitting in first place in the OVC with an 11-1 record. During conference play the Screaming Eagles lead the league in both scoring offense (72.8), scoring margin (+13.5 points per game), field goal percentage (45.7 percent) and opponent field goal percentage (33.2 percent). USI boasts a well-balanced offense which features three players in double figures with Vanessa Shafford (14.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg), Meredith Raley (12.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Madison Webb (10.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg).
The two programs have only met twice with both meetings coming during the 2022-23 campaign. The Skyhawks swept the two matchups last season, picking up a 63-60 comeback victory in Evansville before pulling away with a 68-56 win in Martin.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
