MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in nearly three weeks, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program will play in front of the home crowd when the Skyhawks tip off against Ohio Valley Conference rival Southern Indiana. The game time is set for 7:30 p.m. as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's team.
UT Martin (15-10, 8-4 OVC) is fresh off a season-long four-game road trip, winning three out of four decisions. As a direct result, the Skyhawks are in a three-way tie for second place in the OVC standings with six games remaining in the regular season (four of which will take place in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center).
Last Saturday, UT Martin ended its grueling road swing with a 62-59 triumph against Western Illinois. The Skyhawks wrapped up the contest on a 10-3 run over the final 4:58, winning for the first time this season while scoring fewer than 70 points. It also marked the second time in a dozen games where UT Martin came back to win when trailing with five minutes remaining in regulation.
Jordan Sears (16 points, eight assists, zero turnovers in the full 40 minutes), Issa Muhammad (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Jacob Crews (12 points) all scored in double figures in the win at Western Illinois.
This matchup serves as the Skyhawks' only peek at Southern Indiana during the 2023-24 regular season. Last season, UT Martin improved to 5-0 all-time at home against the Screaming Eagles courtesy of an 86-83 victory in overtime. Sears registered 32 points while KK Curry chipped in 13 points to lead the Skyhawks.
Southern Indiana (7-18, 4-8 OVC) dialed up an impressive 84-67 home victory over SIUE last Saturday. AJ Smith recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Screaming Eagles shot 58.7 percent (27-of-46), including an 11-of-21 clip from three-point range.
In league play, Jeremiah Hernandez leads the OVC with 2.1 steals per outing while ranking second in scoring (20.9 points per game). Jack Mielke tops the OVC in three-point percentage (.449) as part of a potent Southern Indiana offense.
