MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in exactly a month, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will play in front of the home crowd when the Skyhawks host Montreat at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center tomorrow. Tipoff time is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
Since defeating Kentucky Christian by a 114-61 margin on Nov. 7, UT Martin has endured a tough six-game stretch that included five true road games and one neutral-site contest. The Skyhawks now close out their nonconference slate with two out of three games at the Elam Center, where the squad is 27-4 since the start of the 2022-23 campaign. During that 31-game stretch, UT Martin is producing 88.0 points per outing and winning by an average of 15.2 points per contest.
The Skyhawks (2-6) concluded their road stretch on Tuesday, falling 83-68 at Charleston Southern. Despite the setback, the UT Martin backcourt duo of Josué Grullon (career-high 24 points) and Tarence Guinyard (18 points) combined to shoot 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the field.
Grullon currently leads the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring average (18.5 points per game) and three-point field goals made (3.3 per outing) while also ranking fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.382) and sixth in field goal percentage (.460). Vladimer Salaridze has also been a force so far for the Skyhawks as the senior forward ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in rebounding (8.3 per contest, second) and steals (1.8 per game, ninth).
A NAIA program out of Montreat, NC, the Cavaliers (8-4) are coming off an impressive 110-83 triumph over Appalachian Athletic Conference rival St. Andrews on Wednesday. AJ Baskerville (27 points, 13 rebounds) and Jarden Maze (17 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists) each had double-doubles while Jack Keller (19 points), RJ Manginello (13) and Xavier Thornton (11) also scored in double figures for Montreat, who sank 18 three-pointers in 41 attempts for a 43.9 percent clip.
