MARTIN, Tenn. – A six-game stretch that has taken the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program through five different states wraps up with a midweek clash at Charleston Southern. Tipoff from Charleston, SC is set for 6:30 p.m. CT tomorrow on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks are taking on the Buccaneers for the first time in school history as Charleston Southern is the only active Big South institution that UT Martin has never faced. This marks the Skyhawks' second Big South opponent of the 2024-25 campaign as UT Martin's second stop on its six-game road swing was a narrow 64-62 setback at defending league tournament champion Longwood.
The Skyhawks (2-5) were last in action on Wednesday - a 78-35 setback at then-No. 6 Tennessee last Wednesday. In that game, UT Martin was within striking distance (trailing 30-20) with two minutes remaining before the halftime break before the Volunteers created some separation over the final 20 minutes. Josué Grullon topped the Skyhawks with 15 points in a career-high 28 minutes off the bench.
Three-point offense and defense has been a key factor for UT Martin so far in 2024-25. The Skyhawks rank 11th nationally in three-point attempts per contest (31.3) while guarding the three-point arc at a 27.9 percent success rate (61-of-219), a number that ranks 40th in NCAA Division I men's basketball.
The Buccaneers (2-7) are coming off an impressive 83-79 road triumph at Miami on Saturday. Charleston Southern led by as many as 13 points in the second half and outscored the traditional Atlantic Coast Conference power by a 38-22 margin in the paint. Three Buccaneers went off for notable performances, led by RJ Johnson's game-high 23 points. Taje' Kelly tallied a double-double (20 points, game-high 11 rebounds) to go along with six assists while Thompson Camara's 21 points were boosted by a 5-of-10 effort from three-point land.
