MARTIN, Tenn. – Two of the three squads that shared the Ohio Valley Conference regular season men's basketball championship last season will square off tomorrow as the University of Tennessee at Martin travels to Morehead State in both teams' league opener. Tipoff from Ellis T. Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky. is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
The Skyhawks have won three out of their last four OVC openers on the road dating back to the 2020-21 campaign. In its 33-year history in the league, this marks only the third time that UT Martin has started its OVC schedule at Morehead State (also occurring in 2010-11 and 2008-09).
The Skyhawks (4-7) concluded nonconference play on Sunday with a convincing 123-56 victory over Champion Christian. UT Martin knocked down a school-record 19 three-pointers at a 45.2 percent clip and snared a program-high 73 rebounds in the game. Tarence Guinyard poured in 31 points for the second straight outing, eventually leading to Oscar Robertson Trophy National Player of the Week, OVC Player of the Week and OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades.
Vladimer Salaridze (12 points, 13 rebounds), Filip Radaković (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Lamine Niang (14 points, 12 rebounds) each secured double-doubles against Champion Christian - marking the first time that three Skyhawks posted double-doubles in the same game since Nov. 13, 2007. Radaković became the first UT Martin freshman to manage a double-double since Feb. 11, 2012.
The backcourt duo of Josué Grullon (23 points) and Matija Žužić (17 points) also combined for a dozen treys for the Skyhawks against Champion Christian.
The Eagles (4-6) have been led so far by UT Martin transfer Kenny White, Jr., who is averaging a team-best 13.5 points per outing while ranking seventh in the OVC in field goal percentage (.460). Morehead State is coming off an 86-63 victory over common Skyhawk opponent Kentucky Christian on Sunday as Steven Clay (16 points) and Jalen Breazeale (10 points) each scored in double figures.
