INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The awards keep rolling in for University of Tennessee at Martin guard Tarence Guinyard, who was named as one of five Oscar Robertson Trophy National Players of the Week in NCAA Division I men's basketball by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Just yesterday, Guinyard became the fifth Skyhawk to ever win Ohio Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week honors on the same day. He is the first UT Martin honoree to win the Oscar Robertson Trophy National Player of the Week accolade since Jacob Crews on Feb. 20, 2024.
Guinyard joins Kentucky's Lamont Butler, Milwaukee's Jamichael Stillwell, Arkansas State's Taryn Todd and Nebraska's Brice Williams as Oscar Robertson Trophy National Players of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 15.
A junior out of Tampa, Fla., Guinyard averaged 31.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists on a scorching 65.6 percent shooting (21-for-32) effort from the floor in outings against Alabama State and Champion Christian. The 6-2, 170-pound speedster generated 60 of his 62 points on the week after halftime of Wednesday's Alabama State matchup – tossing in 29 points in the final 17:57 of that game before going off for a career-best 31 points for the second straight game in only 22 minutes of playing time on Sunday against Champion Christian.
Since the 2009-10 season, the Oscar Robertson Trophy has been affiliated with a National Player of the Week program. Every Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members select five players from the 31 NCAA Division I conference players of the week to be recognized.
The Skyhawks crank up their OVC schedule this week, traveling to Morehead State on Thursday, Dec. 19 before visiting Southern Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 21.
