MARTIN, Tenn. – The first home game of the Jeremy Shulman Era at the University of Tennessee at Martin will feature the Skyhawk men's basketball team against Kentucky Christian in the annual Education Day contest. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
Area middle and high school students will attend the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center for the game, which will be the first time that UT Martin (1-0) has ever squared off against the NAIA program out of Grayson, Ky.
The Skyhawks are fresh off arguably their most impressive season-opening victory since joining the NCAA Division I ranks, defeating Illinois State by a 67-65 margin on Monday. UT Martin showed off a dazzling defensive effort, limiting the host Redbirds to just 8-for-41 (19.5 percent) from three-point land and 29 percent (18-of-62) overall. It marked the first time that the Skyhawks held a Division I team to under 30 percent shooting since Jan. 28, 2021. As a result, UT Martin tallied just the second true road victory in a season opener in its Divison I Era (since 1992), also winning 63-58 at Saint Louis in the first game of the 2002-03 campaign.
Josué Grullon and Vladimer Salaridze - UT Martin's two Ohio Valley Conference preseason "Players to Watch" - excelled in the season opener. Grullon poured in a game-high 18 points with nine rebounds while Salaridze (11 points, 12 rebounds) became just the fourth Skyhawk to record a season-opening double-double in his UT Martin debut against a NCAA Division I squad. The backcourt trio of Tarence Guinyard (12 points), Afan Trnka (11) and Carlos Cortijo (10) also scored in double figures for the Skyhawks.
Kentucky Christian (0-2) played back-to-back days to open its season last week, falling 85-64 to Campbellsville on Nov. 1 and 95-76 to Lindsey Wilson on Nov. 2. D'Angelo Stoxstill posted an impressive effort in the Knights' season opener, collecting 24 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and three steals.
