11/5/2024 4:00:00 PM | Football
The final quarter of the season sees the No. 19 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin football program traveling to Big South-OVC Football Association foe Charleston Southern riding a five-game winning streak. The two programs will square off for the first time at Buccaneer Field with a matchup on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-3, 4-1 Big South-OVC) enter the game on the heels of a five-game winning streak after going on the road and knocking off No. 25 ranked Tennessee State. UT Martin jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the game's first eight minutes and never conceded its advantage while leaning on its defense in the second half to secure its advantage. Four forced turnovers propelled the Skyhawks to victory – including a pair of interceptions by Chris Hunter, Jr. inside the 10-yard line – while a key defense stand inside their redzone held off a late rally.
UT Martin leads the Big South-OVC Football Association in 14 statistical categories. The Skyhawks lead the association in rushing offense, rushing defense, scoring offense, sacks allowed, defensive touchdowns, interceptions, turnovers lost, turnover margin, time of possession, team passing efficiency, third down conversion defense, passing yards per completion, punt returns and blocked kicks allowed. Running back Patrick Smith (rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns), Chris Hunter (interceptions), safety Oshae Baker (combined kick returns, punt returns), Jaylon Sharpe (tackles for loss) and cornerback JaMichael McGoy, Jr. (passes defended) also lead the conference in their respective categories.
Charleston Southern (1-8, 0-6 Big South-OVC) has lost its last seven games but has dropped three single-score contests during that span. The Buccaneers boast a stingy defense – allowing just 343.8 yards per game – and 24.9 points per game. Running back Autavius Ison ranks second in the Association with 96.0 rushing yards per game while tallying three touchdowns. On the defense side, Steve Zayachkowsky leads the team with 56 total tackles.
This contest marks the first trip to Charleston for UT Martin. The Skyhawks have come out victorious in the two previous meetings in 1994 (42-14) and 2023 (17-0) in its two meetings.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while locally fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play) call the action.
