
UT Martin Volleyball Drops Series Finale At SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team fell in three sets (23-25, 25-27, 22-25) this evening to SIUE in its final road match of the 2024 regular season.
Kristin Phillips had the best offensive night for the Skyhawks (5-20, 3-13 Ohio Valley Conference), recording 11 kills with just one error in 22 attempts for a scorching .455 hitting percentage. Katie Cruise (20) and Hannah Haislip (15) combined to assist on 35 of UT Martin's 42 kills tonight. Cruise added a pair of service aces while Josie Hess (season-best 12 digs) and Dylan Mott (10 scoops) led the defensive attack.
The Cougars (12-15, 7-9 OVC) took a 10-3 lead in the opening set but the Skyhawks kept chipping away. UT Martin eventually reeled off a 10-4 run to lead by a 22-20 margin. The Skyhawks soon led 23-21 but SIUE charged back to tally the final four points of the first stanza. Phillips had four kills in six swings for a .667 attack percentage in Set 1.
The middle set remarkably featured 16 tie scores and eight lead changes. A Surratt kill gave the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead early before a service ace from Haislip kept UT Martin's advantage at 16-14. Soon thereafter, the Skyhawks scored six out of seven points as a Kayla Bryant kill made the score 23-18 in favor of UT Martin. However, the Cougars ended the set on a 9-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Phillips (five kills) and Maddy Gladson (four kills in four swings) paced the Skyhawks in the second stanza.
Six different UT Martin players (Kylie Surratt, Bryant, Addy Vaughn, Mott, Phillips, Haislip) were responsible for the first six Skyhawk kills in the final set. However, the Cougars took control and eventually led by a 23-17 margin. UT Martin put up a fight with five consecutive points (including two service aces and two assists from Cruise) pulled the Skyhawks within one. However, SIUE recovered to score back-to-back points to complete the match. Vaughn was the star for UT Martin in the third set, accounting for a match-high four kills in the final stanza.
The Skyhawks conclude the 2024 regular season next week at home, hosting in-state OVC foe Tennessee Tech on Tuesday, Nov. 19 (6 p.m.) and Wednesday, Nov. 20 (4 p.m.).
