MARTIN, Tenn. – The second stop in the University of Tennessee at Martin's six-game road swing takes the Skyhawk men's basketball squad to Farmville, Va. to take on defending Big South Conference tournament champion Longwood. Tipoff tomorrow is set for 12 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
UT Martin is 2-0 all-time against the Lancers, defeating Longwood by a 89-79 margin at home on Feb. 23, 2013 before a 77-67 triumph in Farmville on Dec. 6, 2014. The Lancers are the first of two Big South opponents on the Skyhawks' 2024-25 schedule as UT Martin concludes this current road stretch at Charleston Southern on Dec. 3.
The Skyhawks (2-1) are coming off their first setback of the season, falling 87-69 at North Alabama on Monday. UT Martin trailed by just a single possession (44-41) at the halftime break but the host Lions shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Josué Grullon went off for a game-high 24 points in 27 minutes off the bench while Afan Trnka (10 points) scored in double digits for the third consecutive game to open his Skyhawk career.
Grullon has been impressive so far in 2024-25, leading the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring (20.3 points per game) and three-point field goals made (4.0 per outing). Vladimer Salaridze - who was named a Preseason OVC "Player to Watch" alongside Grullon - tops the league in rebounding (8.7 per contest).
After last season's squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, Longwood is off to a 3-0 start in 2024-25. The Lancers are defeating NCAA Division I opponents by an average of 16.0 points per outing, including a 76-62 triumph over Milwaukee on Wednesday. In that game, Johan Nziemi (16 points), Elijah Tucker (14 points) and KJ McClurg (11 points) each scored in double figures while Longwood held the opposition to 16.7 percent (4-of-24) shooting from three-point land.
