10/1/2024 12:47:00 PM | Football
The University of Tennessee at Martin football program holds its annual Homecoming contest when playing host to Big South-OVC foe Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 5. Kickoff from Hardy M. Graham Stadium is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (2-3, 0-1 Big South-OVC) return home after posting a historic win last week with a 24-13 road victory over FBS foe Kennesaw State. UT Martin never trailed in the contest as the squad posted its second win over a FBS opponent in school history – joining the team's victory over Memphis back in 2012.
Saturday's contest features both programs who claimed the inaugural Big South-OVC Football Association title in 2023. Both teams finished the year with a 5-1 association record while Gardner-Webb grabbed the head-to-head victory with a game-winning touchdown with 13 seconds to play to secure a 38-34 victory in Boiling Springs.
UT Martin returns to conference play looking to lean on its homefield advantage to propel the team to victory. The Skyhawks entered the 2024 season winning three consecutive conference titles since 2021 and possess a 15-3 record against conference foes during that span. The squad has been especially impressive in Graham Stadium against league opponent where they have remained undefeated since Apr. 3, 2020.
Running back Patrick Smith tallied his third 100-yard rushing performance last week while notching 476 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Kinkead Dent will be under center with 549 yards and five touchdowns in the passing game while receiver Trevonte Rucker leads the team with 265 yards and four touchdowns. Safety Oshae Baker was named Big South-OVC Defensive Player of the Week after tallying six tackles and a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown last week.
Gardner-Webb (1-4, 0-1 Big South-OVC) earned the league's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs last year while new head coach Chris Reisert enters his first season at the helm. The Runnin' Bulldogs average 354.6 yards per game of total offense while quarterback Tyler Riddell leads the passing attack with 1,086 yards and four touchdowns. Carson Gresock paces the ground game with 266 yards and five rushing touchdowns. The defense is led by Trevor Moffitt with 35 total tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.
This marks the sixth meeting between the two programs in a series which began in 2001. Gardner-Webb holds a slight advantage in the series with a 3-2 record while the Runnin' Bulldogs will make their first visit to Graham Stadium since 2006.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while locally fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play), John Hatler (analyst) and Chris Brinkley (analyst) call the action. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
