WACO, Texas – With the start of the spring season just 10 days away, the University of Tennessee at Martin was voted 10th in the initial National Collegiate Equestrian Association poll of the new semester.
The Skyhawks have now been nationally ranked in all 12 NCEA polls during the 2023-24 season. Today's poll marked the first set of rankings since Dec. 5 as the collegiate equestrian campaign opened back up nationwide with six matches spanning last Thursday through Saturday.
UT Martin more than held its own against a tough fall schedule, defeating Eastern College Athletic Conference foe South Dakota State (Oct. 12) and then-No. 8 Baylor (Nov. 18). Six of the Skyhawks' eight opponents in the fall were nationally ranked as UT Martin also had a pair of close calls (11-9 loss to No. 2 Auburn on Oct. 13, 12-7 setback to No. 1 TCU on Oct. 27) against some of the best competition in the country.
Overall, the Skyhawks came away with 59 head-to-head victories in the fall. UT Martin's most successful event was reining as the Skyhawks earned 17 wins and five MOP's (two from Emma Schaefer, two by Lexi Bailey and one from Kate Davis). A total of 13 horsemanship victories (including MOP's from Schaefer and Ava Newsom) led to 30 combined triumphs in the Western discipline.
In the Jumping Seat discipline, the Skyhawks boasted 16 wins in fences and 13 victories in flat. The trio of Sydney Hott, Elizabeth Becker and Gabby Adams accounted for MOP accolades in fences while Hott and Sophia Sundem were awarded MOP honors in flat.
TCU remained at No. 1 in today's poll and was followed by No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 SMU, No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 South Carolina, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Delaware State, No. 9 UC Davis and No. 10 UT Martin.
The Skyhawks face a pair of nationally ranked opponents right out of the gate to kick off their spring season, hosting No. 8 Delaware State and No. 9 UC Davis on Feb. 9-10 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
