MARTIN, Tenn. – The lone January road contest on the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball schedule is on tap as the Skyhawks head to Morehead State in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup tomorrow. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
This matchup pits strength against strength as UT Martin leads the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring offense (82.8 points per game), three-point field goal percentage (.359) and free throw percentage (.752). Meanwhile, the Eagles rank first in the league - and top-10 nationally - in scoring defense (62.6 points per outing) and defensive field goal percentage (.378).
The Skyhawks' two Preseason All-OVC honorees have each tasted individual success against Morehead State. Last season, Jordan Sears averaged 17.5 points per contest against the Eagles while KK Curry is the owner of two big outings (career-high 24 points on Feb. 16, 2022, 14 points and career-best 16 rebounds on Dec. 31, 2022) when matched up against Morehead State.
UT Martin (10-8, 3-2 OVC) is coming off a 77-72 home victory over Little Rock last Saturday. Reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week Jacob Crews accumulated a career-high 35 points (second-most by any OVC player in 2023-24) to go along with seven rebounds while Sears (15 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals) and Issa Muhammad (12 points, nine rebounds) also scored in double figures for the Skyhawks.
The defending OVC regular season champion Eagles (13-5, 4-1 OVC) suffered their first league loss of the season on Saturday, falling 61-48 at SIUE. Three-time OVC Player of the Week Riley Minix snatched his league-best eighth double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) while Jordan Lathon added 12 points for Morehead State.
Drew Thelwell (OVC-best 6.2 assists per game) and Kalil Thomas (OVC-high 2.9 three-pointers per outing) contribute to a well-balanced attack for the Eagles, who have won 14 consecutive decisions at Ellis T. Johnson Arena (sixth-longest active streak in NCAA Division I men's hoops entering the week).
