1/12/2024 8:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball will cap off its three-game homestand by hosting defending Ohio Valley Conference regular season champion Little Rock on Saturday, Jan. 13. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-9, 3-1 OVC) split the first two games of the homestand after narrowly falling to Eastern Illinois (72-70) before knocking off newest OVC foe Western Illinois (68-49) most recently by a 19-point margin on Thursday evening. The game marked the third straight game in which the squad has shot 50 percent or better from the field while placing four players in double figures in back-to-back games.
UT Martin features four players who are averaging double-digit scoring performances in league play led by Anaya Brown (15.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg) while be followed by Kenley McCarn (14.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Norah Clark (12.5 ppg) and Lexi Rubel (11.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 5.0 apg). The squad features OVC top-10 statistical performers in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, assists, blocks, steals and minutes.
The contest features a pair of veteran head coaches in UT Martin's Kevin McMillan and Little Rock's Joe Foley. The tandem has combined to win 1,114 career games with McMillan ranking as the program's all-time wins leader with 271 victories while Foley has accumulated 843 victories – including 387 wins in his 20 seasons at Little Rock.
Little Rock (4-11, 3-1 OVC) has overcome a tough non-conference schedule to sit near the top of the OVC standings after winning the league's regular season in its debut season in 2022-23. The Trojans have won four of their last five games and are sitting tied for second place in the league standings with Morehead State and UT Martin with a 3-1 mark.
The Trojans are led offensively by Faith Lee with 14.5 points per game while Jayla Brooks sits just outside double figures with 9.9 points per game. Guard Jaiyah Harris-Smith adds 7.0 points per game while ranking seventh nationally with 6.8 assists per game.
Saturday's contest marks the seventh meeting between the two programs with both teams winning three games apiece in the all-time series. Last season's matchups went down to the wire in both contests with Little Rock squeaking out a buzzer-beating victory at home by a final margin of 45-44 before knocking UT Martin off in the Elam Center by a final score of 53-49.
The contest will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play) and John Hatler (analyst) call the action live from courtside.
