The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will return to Ohio Valley Conference action on Thursday, Jan. 11 when playing host to newest member Western Illinois in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. on the front end of a doubleheader, with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (5-9, 2-1 OVC) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end in dramatic fashion last time out as a putback jumper with 2.4 seconds to play proved to be the difference in a 72-70 home loss to Eastern Illinois last Thursday evening. UT Martin shot 50 percent from the field in the contest and placed four players in double figures before the second chance opportunity cost the home squad.
Rising sophomore Anaya Brown posted the best offensive performance of her young career by eclipsing 20 points for the second time in her career while setting a new scoring-high with 25 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals against EIU. Over the past 10 games, Brown has scored in double figures nine times and ranks in the OVC top-10 in both scoring (13.7 ppg, ninth) and rebounding (8.4, rpg, third).
Western Illinois (11-3, 2-1 OVC) entered its inaugural season in the OVC with an impressive record – boasting a 9-2 mark against non-conference foes. Once in league play, the Leathernecks have picked up wins over SIUE and Lindenwood while falling to Southeast Missouri. The squad averages 80.6 points per game and has posted an average margin of victory of 18.1 points this season.
The Leathernecks boast a balanced offense with four players averaging in double figures – led by the play of standout freshman Raegan McCown who has been named OVC Freshman of the Week six times. McCowan leads the league with 17.9 points per game while sitting tied for fourth with 7.4 rebounds per game. Anna Deets (13.3 ppg), Addi Brownfield (11.7 ppg) and Mallory McDermott (11.5 ppg) round out the formidable scoring offense.
This marks the third meeting between the two programs and the first in nearly four decades since going head-to-head back on Jan. 13, 1983. UT Martin has won both previous matchups in the all-time series.
The contest will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
