MARTIN, Tenn. – The middle date of a three-game homestand for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will feature two of the country's best teams on the glass when the Skyhawks host Western Illinois tomorrow. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7:30 p.m. as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's basketball team.
UT Martin (9-7, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference) leads the nation in defensive rebounding (32.25 per contest) and is 10th nationally in rebounds per game (42.75). Meanwhile, the visiting Leathernecks rank second in NCAA Division I men's basketball in total rebounding (44.94 per outing) and sixth in offensive boards per game (15.44).
Although Western Illinois officially joined the OVC last summer and is making its first rounds across the league, the Leathernecks are no strangers to the Skyhawks. These two teams have met four times since 2018 with the series being split right down the middle at 2-all during that span.
UT Martin will be taking the court for the first time in exactly a week as it looks to bounce back after a 79-72 home setback to Eastern Illinois. Jordan Sears padded his OVC scoring lead with a game-high 26 points while KK Curry equaled a season-high with 16 points for the second straight game for the Skyhawks.
Armed with the OVC's top scoring offense at 84.4 points per outing, UT Martin boasts four players who average double figures in the scoring column in OVC play in Sears (20.7 points per game), Jacob Crews (14.7), Issa Muhammad (13.0) and Curry (12.7).
Western Illinois (10-6, 3-0 OVC) enters this contest on a seven-game winning streak - the longest for the program since the 2012-13 campaign. The Leathernecks are playing outside the state of Illinois for the first time in OVC play, tallying a 78-70 road win at SIUE before home victories last week against Southeast Missouri (68-61) and Lindenwood (68-57). Drew Cisse's 196 total rebounds are the most in the country while the 6-11 senior center also ranks seventh nationally in blocked shots (38).
