MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country team opened up the 2023 season at the City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic. The men's team finished fifth while the women's team placed 12^th.

The women's team was paced by Lydia Tankersley who ran a 19:38.91. Maggie Roy (19:49.27), Brooke Skoog (20:01.84) and Gabrielle Brown (20:27.54) also performed well in 2023 opener. Freshman Violet Francisco logged a time of 20:28.84 in her debut as a Skyhawk.

The men's team started the year with a top-five finish, led by reigning Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Luke Johnson who finished 17^th with a PR of 20:39.90. Sam Shuman crossed the finish line in 24^th at a time of 20:53.64. Ethan Knight marked a new PR with a 20:57.80. Hudson Hall (21:05.21) and Brady Millikin (21:23.12) rounded out the scoring for UT Martin on the night.

The Skyhawks will be back in action in the John McNichols Cross Country Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The men will race at 8 a.m. with the women will begin at 8:45 a.m.
