WACO, Texas – With the start of the 2023-24 University of Tennessee at Martin season looming just nine days away, the Skyhawks received some national publicity today as the National Collegiate Equestrian Association revealed its first set of top-10 rankings.
The NCEA Selection Committee voted UT Martin at No. 10 in the dual discipline preseason poll, following No. 1 SMU, No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 TCU, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 South Carolina and No. 9 UC Davis.
The Skyhawks are no strangers to the NCEA top-10 poll as UT Martin was ranked in 14 of 17 weekly editions in 2022-23 after going undefeated in Eastern College Athletic Conference play during the regular season.
A total of 22 returners grace the Skyhawk roster as the program also welcomes in 15 newcomers (all freshmen). Reigning ECAC Coach of the Year Kim Leiter (and reigning ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year Caitlin Marshall) return NCEA reining second team All-American Logan Putvinski as well as All-ECAC honorees Sydney Hott (earning that title in both fences and flat) and Lexi Bailey (horsemanship).
Additional UT Martin returnees who made at least five starts last season include Elizabeth Becker (fences), Kate Davis (horsemanship/reining), Haley Kane (fences/flat), Marci Leath (reining), Aubrey Malone (reining), Emma Schaefer (horsemanship/reining), Sophia Sundem (flat) and Rileigh Weiss (flat).
The Skyhawks open the season next weekend with back-to-back meets against Southeastern Conference foes. UT Martin will visit No. 8 South Carolina on Friday, Sept. 29 before heading to No. 6 Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 30.
