MARTIN, Tenn. – Almost exactly one year since the University of Tennessee at Martin hoisted the Ohio Valley Conference golf championship trophy at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo., the Skyhawks will be back in action at the same venue for the 2023 OVC Championships. The tournament features three rounds of stroke play on Sunday, April 23 through Tuesday, April 25 before the top four teams in the standings advance to a match-play semifinals and finals round on Wednesday, April 26.
The Skyhawks will be making a bid at history as only five teams have accomplished a "three-peat" of OVC team championships. With a win next week, UT Martin would become the first school since Jacksonville State (2017-19) to capture three consecutive league titles.
One year after playing host to the OVC Championships for the first time ever, the Dalhousie Golf Club will play between 6,800 and 7,150 yards. A pristine Nicklaus Design course that opened in 2002, Dalhousie presents a tough challenge. Last April, the Skyhawks shot an 898 (+34) to rank second in the stroke play standings before defeating Morehead State and Tennessee Tech by identical 3-2 margins in the match play portion.
UT Martin's practice round is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The Skyhawks will tee off between 8:50 and 9:30 a.m. during Sunday's opening round before the All-OVC postseason awards banquet will be held at 6:30 that evening. UT Martin's tee times for Monday's second round and Tuesday's Round 3 are predicated on the tournament standings.
The three-day weather forecast for stroke play shows mostly sunny skies and a high between 60-65 degrees. Wednesday's match play forecast includes a 48 percent chance of scattered showers.
Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford has revealed an OVC Championship lineup of Jacob Uehlein at No. 1, Dax Isbell at No. 2, Ethan Ray at No. 3, Bryson Morrell at No. 4 and Jonathan Xoinis at No. 5. Freshman Luke Caldwell will also make the trip and is eligible to substitute for any member of the UT Martin scoring lineup.
A senior from Tullahoma, Tenn., Uehlein will be making his third straight OVC Championship appearance. He tied for 17th place in the standings in 2021 before a 10th-place effort (224, +8) at Dalhousie last spring. He is responsible for a 74.8 stroke average over a team-best 25 rounds in 2022-23, topping the squad with three top-15 finishes.
Isbell is making his OVC Championship debut as the freshman out of Cumming, Ga. is currently playing as well as any Skyhawk. He generated back-to-back 12th-place finishes earlier this month in tournaments hosted by Bellarmine (217, +1) and Tennessee State (212, -1). He took part in 21 rounds during his rookie campaign and came away with a 75.1 scoring average.
The reining OVC Golfer of the Week, Ray's 73.8 stroke average is the best of any UT Martin golfer with more than 10 rounds in 2022-23. The redshirt sophomore from Collierville, Tenn. is set to make his OVC Championship debut as his six par-or-better rounds this season ranks as a team-high.
An All-OVC selection a year ago, Morrell placed 13th (226, +10) in the league championship individual standings. This season, he accounts for a 75.7 scoring average and owns the best tournament finish of any Skyhawk – a runner-up performance (208, -1) at the Grover Page Classic on Sept. 19-20. One day later, the senior out of Knoxville, Tenn. was named OVC Golfer of the Week.
Xoinis is also set for his second consecutive OVC Championships appearance as the Chattanooga, Tenn. native shot a 233 (+17) last season. He contributed a 76.7 stroke average and provided 20 countable scores in 24 opportunities in the UT Martin scoring lineup during his redshirt sophomore season.
Hailing from Cookeville, Tenn., Caldwell tallied a 76.3 scoring average over 19 rounds as a true freshman this season. The lefty provided a career-best score of 69 in the first round of the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate a little over 10 days ago.
