MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad aims for a season sweep over the Eastern Illinois Panthers as the Ohio Valley Conference foes will battle it out at Lantz Arena. Tipoff from Charleston, Ill. on Thursday, Feb. 9 is set for 7:30 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's game as the backend of a doubleheader).
The Skyhawks displayed balanced scoring in the first meeting between these two sides as UT Martin claimed a 91-78 home victory on Jan. 21. Chris Nix (perfect 7-for-7 shooting performance) and Parker Stewart (game-high eight rebounds) shared the team lead with 19 points apiece while KJ Simon (16), Jordan Sears (15) and Jalen Myers (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column for the Skyhawks, who shot 64 percent (16-for-25) in the final 20 minutes to ice the win.
UT Martin is coming off a tough 80-75 road setback at Lindenwood in a contest that was a statistical anomaly for the Skyhawks. UT Martin committed just seven turnovers and connected on 11 three-pointers but couldn't overcome a 23-3 Lion run in the second half. Sears (19 points), Myers (18), Simon (14) and Desmond Williams (11) each scored in double digits for the Skyhawks, who lost for only the second time this season when outrebounding their opponent (was previously 13-1 and holding a halftime lead (previously 12-1).
The Preseason All-OVC duo of Simon and Stewart have excelled against the Panthers in their careers. Simon has averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds over three games while Stewart is responsible for 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals over a pair of outings against Eastern Illinois.
The Panthers have lost six straight games, including a 65-61 home decision to Tennessee State last Saturday. Playing without leading scorer Kinyon Hodges (25 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals against UT Martin earlier this year), Eastern Illinois was led by Caleb Donaldson (17 points, team-best five assists) and OVC Freshman of the Week Cameron Haffner (12 points, game-high nine rebounds).
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will call all of the action live from courtside locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, plus a link to follow along with live stats, are located above.
