The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team officially kicks off Ohio Valley Conference action this week when traveling to Music City for a matchup against Tennessee State on Thursday, Dec. 28. Tipoff from the Gentry Center is slated for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (3-8, 0-0 OVC) are hoping to build off the team's last contest in which the squad closed out non-conference action with a 67-62 road victory at Arkansas State last Thursday prior to Christmas break. UT Martin limited its opponent to a 36.5 percent shooting afternoon while erasing a first half deficit en route to the team's first road win of the season.
Sophomore Anaya Brown had a big performance against Arkansas State which parlayed into being named OVC Player of the Week after exploding for a dominant double-double which featured 18 points and 17 rebounds in the contest. Her career-best rebounding performance ranked as the best by a Skyhawk since 2008 and the most in a single game by an OVC athlete this season. Brown will look to continue a stretch of back-to-back double-doubles in the same building where she tallied 17 points and six rebounds in the Gentry Center last season.
Redshirt-freshman Kenley McCarn paces the squad and ranks fourth in the league with 15.8 points per game while adding 4.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game as she enters her first taste of OVC action. Freshman Norah Clark (9.3 ppg) and sophomore Lexi Rubel (8.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.7 apg) are offensive threats as well.
Tennessee State (3-7, 0-0 OVC) also picked up a win in its last contest prior to the break, knocking off UT Southern by a final score of 86-79 in overtime. Sanaa' St. Andre paces the Lady Tigers with 10.7 points per game while both Caitlin Anderson (8.7 ppg) and Eboni Williams (8.6 ppg) rank as the only players to have started in all 10 contests for the host team.
Thursday's contest marks the 69th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 38-30 advantage in the all-time series. The two programs have split the last two season series' with each team winning on its home court. The Skyhawks are looking to pick up their first win in the Gentry Center since the team's 2020-21 championship campaign.
