MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program looks to continue its home dominance in the nonconference finale tomorrow against William Woods at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
Victors of 18 of their last 20 home decisions, the Skyhawks have averaged 91.2 points per outing in front of the home crowd during that span. With a triumph against William Woods, UT Martin (6-6) would wrap up nonconference play with a winning record for the second straight season and the fifth time in the last decade (also accomplishing that feat in 2016-17, 2015-16 and 2014-15).
The Skyhawks are coming off a narrow 98-91 setback at Evansville on Monday evening. In that game, UT Martin equaled season-bests in field goal percentage (.486) and fewest turnovers (nine) against a NCAA Division I opponent but the Purple Aces shot 56.3 percent (18-for-32) with 20 free throws in the final 20 minutes.
Four Skyhawks accumulated at least 15 points at Evansville, led by the duo of Jordan Sears (game-high 26 points) and Jacob Crews (24 points, 10 rebounds). Justus Jackson also registered 15 points while Kenny White, Jr. tallied 15 points in his UT Martin debut, three days after the NCAA granted immediate eligibility to two-time transfers.
An NAIA program based out of Fulton, Mo., William Woods (7-4) enters this contest as winners of five straight outings. That winning streak does not include a 71-69 exhibition road victory over NCAA Division II member Lincoln on Monday night. Playing without leading scorer DJ Purnell, the Owls earned the upset thanks in large part to Francis Okwuosah (20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds) and Gacoby Jones, Jr. (go-ahead game-winning three-pointer with 4.5 seconds to go) against a Lincoln squad that was previously 8-1 on the season.
