The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will play its final game in the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center of the 2023 calendar year when hosting Summit League foe South Dakota on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tipoff between the two squads is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
To celebrate the final non-conference home game and the upcoming holidays, fans are invited to wear their favorite Tacky Christmas sweater to the game.
The Skyhawks (2-7) picked up their second win in the last three games with a 69-41 victory over Freed-Hardeman on Wednesday. In conjunction with the program's annual Education Day, UT Martin played in front of over 3,000 area students and rewarded them with a 28-point victory. The squad was impressive defensively, limiting their visitors to just 41 points and just a 28.9 percent shooting clip from the floor.
UT Martin has leaned heavily on its young core including standout performers Kenley McCarn, Anaya Brown and Lexi Rubel. The trio has combined to score 56.2 percent of the team's total scoring output on the season as McCarn (14.0 ppg) and Brown (12.4 ppg) both average in double figures. Meanwhile, Rubel has scored in double figures in four straight games and is averaging 14.3 points and 6.0 rebounds during the stretch.
South Dakota (8-3) enters the contest looking to build upon a pair of sizeable wins over non-Division I programs by an average margin of 63.5 points this week while scoring over 100 points in both games. The Yotes are led by do-it-all guard Grace Larkins who paces the team in points (16.3 ppg), rebounds (6.6 rpg) and assists (4.5 apg).
Saturday's game marks the second game of a home-and-home series which opened last season between the two programs. The Skyhawks came away with a 67-61 road victory in Vermillion last season while Brown notched her first career double-double in the win with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
While the game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+, fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network locally to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
