MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will play host to both NAIA foe Freed-Hardeman and nearly 3,000 local students in a Wednesday matinee for Education Day on Dec. 13. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is slated for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Wednesday's game marks the program's annual Education Day when the Skyhawks welcome thousands of local students from west Tennessee schools. This marks the sixth time that the Skyhawk women have hosted Education Day and the first time since the 2019-20 season. UT Martin is 5-0 in front of its local youth over the years while posting an average margin of victory of 20.4 points per game.
The Skyhawks (1-7) are looking to rely on their home court to support a young squad which features only freshmen and sophomores on the team's available roster. Since 2010, the Elam Center has been a tough place for opponents with the Skyhawks winning 76.8 percent of their contests on Pat Head Summitt Court.
UT Martin is coming off a 71-59 setback at Troy last weekend in which the team placed four players in double figures. Sophomore Lexi Rubel led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds while redshirt-freshman Kenley McCarn tossed in 17 points and added five rebounds to her line score. Sophomore Anaya Brown also reached double figures with 13 points and six rebounds while freshman Norah Clark chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Freed-Hardeman (11-2) has found success through the early portion of the season – stringing together an 11-game winning streak and climbing up to No. 24 in the NAIA national polls – before falling on Monday evening to Brewton-Parker at home (66-62). Rachel Satterly leads the team with 12.1 points per game while Kaylee Odom also averages in double figures with 10.6 points per night.
While the two programs have met in exhibition contests in recent years, this marks only the second official meeting between the two schools separated by just 64 miles. The last official meeting came back in 1983 with UT Martin picking up a 107-78 road victory.
