The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team returns home this weekend to play host to mid-major powerhouse South Dakota State on Saturday, Nov. 18. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin (0-3) is looking for its first win of the season after dropping a road contest to Central Arkansas its last time out by a final margin of 56-45. The Skyhawks gave the Sugar Bears a scare in the fourth quarter – trimming the deficit to six points on multiple occasions – but ultimately could not overcome their tough shooting night in which they shot a season-low 29.7 percent from the field.
Despite the team's offensive shortcomings in the road matchup, the Skyhawk defense bowed up in the second half and limited the Sugar Bears to 23 points in the final 20 minutes – including just seven points in the fourth quarter. The team's seven points allowed ranked as the lowest scoring quarter by an opponent since limiting OVC champion Little Rock to five points back on Dec. 29, 2022.
The Skyhawks feature a pair of scorers averaging double figures with Anaya Brown leading the team with 11.7 points while adding 4.7 rebounds per game. Kenley McCarn ranks second on the team with 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while Lexi Rubel paces the squad with 6.7 rebounds per game.
South Dakota State (1-1) enters the contest ranked No. 1 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 while averaging 25.6 wins per season over the past decade. The Jackrabbits have also won 15 postseason games – including the 2022 WNIT championship – while adding a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Recently the squad posted a win over Arkansas State (55-42) to lead off the season before falling by two points to Wisconsin on Tuesday.
The Jackrabbits are led by the duo Paige Meyer and Brooklyn Meyer. Paige Meyer enters the weekend averaging 18.0 points, 5.0 steals and 4.0 rebounds per game. Brooklyn Meyer has also been a standout, averaging 17.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per contest.
