MARTIN, Tenn. – The EKU Classic multi-team event starts for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad on Friday, Nov. 17 against tournament host Eastern Kentucky. Tipoff time from Baptist Health Arena is set for 6 p.m. CT.
The Skyhawks and Colonels have met 52 times on the hardwood as the two were Ohio Valley Conference rivals from 1992-2021. Although UT Martin made a trip to Richmond as recently as 2021, Jacob Crews (making his collegiate debut for North Florida on Nov. 25, 2020) is the only current Skyhawk who has faced Eastern Kentucky in their career.
UT Martin (2-1) is coming off a 90-72 home victory over Brescia on Monday. In that game, Crews dialed up career-highs of 24 points and 17 rebounds, becoming only the 11th Skyhawk to accumulate at least 20 points and 15 rebounds since the program joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1992. Jordan Sears (19), KK Curry (13), Justus Jackson (10) and Jalen Myers (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column for UT Martin, who held the visitors to 11.8 percent shooting (2-of-17) from three-point land.
The Skyhawks are currently ranked eighth nationally in defensive rebounding per game (35.67) and ninth in fastbreak points (23.67 per contest), a year after finishing in the top-10 in each of those categories.
After winning 23 games and advancing to the College Basketball Invitational championship game in 2022-23, the Colonels are first in the country in scoring offense (120.5 points per game), scoring margin (+47.0), fastbreak points (40.5 per outing), bench points per game (62.5) and assists per game (30.5).
Tabbed as the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason favorites, Eastern Kentucky (2-0) has been led by Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Isaiah Cozart. The 6-7, 240-pound senior has averaged 26.5 points (on 77 percent shooting), 14.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game in blowout wins over West Virginia Tech and Wilberforce.
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+ as links for that broadcast and live stats can be found above.
