
SKYHAWK SOCCER SET FOR FIRST ROUND CLASH WITH LITTLE ROCK IN THE OVC TOURNAMENT

MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team opens up its 20th appearance in the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship with a rematch against last year's first round opponent, Little Rock on Friday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.

In the first year of the Mike Varga era, the Skyhawks (5-7-6, 2-2-5) punched their ticket to the postseason with a fifth-place finish in the standings behind four shutouts in conference play. UT Martin holds a record of 11-16-2 in the OVC Soccer Championships after making it to the quarterfinals in last year's campaign. In total, the program has won two tournament crowns (2011 and 2012) and has appeared in the championship match six times.

As a team, UT Martin is second in the OVC in shots (211) and corners (82), while being fourth in goals scored (18).  Freshman forward Peyton Cook has soared in her first season as a Skyhawk, the Milford, Ohio native ranks third in conference play in shots (31) and second in shots on goal (18). Makayla Robinson holds the team lead in goals with four, while graduate Catey Hunt sits atop the OVC in game-winning scores (3).

Little Rock makes its second consecutive appearance in the OVC Championship following a 5-4-8 season with a 2-3-4 record against conference foes. The Trojans, winners of two out of their last three matches, ended the regular season with a narrow 2-1 loss to Tennessee Tech. As a team, Little Rock ranks second in the conference in goals scored (23) and fourth in league play in shots (116).

The Trojans have seen forward Bronte Peel lead the team offensively as she sits in a tie for third in conference play in goals (three). Sophomore Amaya Arias has fired off 33 shots in the campaign while registering four goals and one assist. Goalkeepers Marie Cimatti and Peyton Urban have combined for 59 saves and a goals-against-average of 1.35.

The regular season matchup featured a 1-1 draw with goals being scored by Little Rock's Mykena Turner and UT Martin's Cook. The Skyhawks hold a slight edge in the all-time series leading 5-4-4. UT Martin won the first matchup in the OVC Championships last year with a 1-0 triumph.
