NO. 17 UT MARTIN FOOTBALL RETURNS TO ACTION WITH HOMECOMING SHOWDOWN AGAINST CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
10/17/2023 10:44:00 AM | Football
The No. 17 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin football team returns home this weekend to play host to new Big South-OVC Football Association foe Charleston Southern on Saturday, Oct. 21. Kickoff for the team's annual Homecoming matchup is slated for 2 p.m. and will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.
Saturday's contest marks the program's annual Homecoming Game when the Skyhawks welcome new league foe Charleston Southern to campus. UT Martin is 39-31 all-time in Homecoming contests – including an 11-5 mark during the Jason Simpson Era.
The Skyhawks (5-1, 2-0 Big South-OVC) enter the matchup riding a seven-game conference winning streak – dating back to last season – which ranks tied for the longest streak in program history. Outside of one loss at the end of the 2021 championship campaign, UT Martin has won 13 of its last 14 league contests since the spring 2020-21 campaign.
In addition to the campus' Homecoming festivities, UT Martin is enjoying a homecoming of its own at Hardy Graham Stadium where the squad has won 12 of its last 13 contests. Against Big South-OVC opponents, the Skyhawks have not lost a home game since Apr. 3, 2020.
A pair of Skyhawks joined the program's all-time top-10 lists in the team's road win at Eastern Illinois prior to the bye week. Running back Sam Franklin moved into a tie for 10th place in program history with his 16th career rushing touchdown. Defensive end Daylan Dotson also posted 4.0 tackles for loss to bump his career total up to 28.5 – moving into ninth place on the program leaderboard.
Charleston Southern (3-3, 1-0 Big South-OVC) comes into the game hot off the program's first win in the newly formed association after knocking off Lindenwood by a final score of 24-10 last week. The Buccaneers have already surpassed last season's win total under first-year head coach Gabe Giardina while quarterback Zolten Osborne was recently named Big South-OVC Freshman of the Week after tossing two touchdowns in the home win.
The matchup marks just the second head-to-head meeting between the two programs all-time. UT Martin came out victorious in the lone previous contest with a 42-14 home win back on Nov. 5, 1994.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while fans locally can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play), John Hatler (analyst) and Chris Brinkley (analyst) call the action. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
