WACO, Texas – Two days ahead of its 2023-24 home opener, the University of Tennessee at Martin retained its No. 10 spot in today's National College Equestrian Association top-10 rankings.
Only three teams changed positions from last week's poll. TCU is still No. 1 while No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 SMU, No. 4 Texas A&M and No. 5 Oklahoma State round out the top five. South Carolina (No. 6), Georgia (No. 7) and Baylor (No. 8) each moved spots while No. 9 (UC Davis) and No. 10 (UT Martin) remained the same.
The Skyhawks have been off from official competition since Sept. 30 as they opened their season with road matchups at then-No. 8 South Carolina and No. 6 Georgia.
In those two meets, UT Martin found its most success in flat as four different riders earned victories. That list includes Sydney Hott, who boasted the team's lone MOP of the first weekend against South Carolina. The Skyhawks averaged 76.5 points per ride in flat in the two meets, winning three of five decisions against the Gamecocks.
UT Martin averaged 76.8 points per ride in fences as a pair of Skyhawks emerged with head-to-head victories against Georgia. Three separate UT Martin riders established career-high scoring during the opening weekend.
In the Western discipline, the Skyhawks were responsible for a pair of wins and one tie in horsemanship, averaging 72.1 points on the nine rides that accumulated scores. UT Martin accounted for one win and three tie scores in reining, combining for a 67.4 scoring average.
The Skyhawks are set for a busy week as they host Eastern College Athletic Conference rival South Dakota State on Thursday, Oct. 12 before taking on No. 2 Auburn on Friday, Oct. 13. Both meets will begin at 10 a.m. in the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
