The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team continues its road swing with a matchup against a first-time opponent when traveling to new Ohio Valley Conference foe Southern Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tipoff from Screaming Eagles Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the game being streamed on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-10, 2-3 OVC) are looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses to Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State in the last week. Unfortunately, injuries have continued to mount for UT Martin with the squad boasting an active roster of just seven available players following injuries to Sharnecce Currie-Jelks, Kenley McCarn, Paige Pipkin and Ella Thompson this season.
On Thursday night, UT Martin and Tennessee State went blow-for-blow in a contest which saw 16 lead changes and six ties. The two squads played even through the opening 20 minutes before TSU found a little breathing room in the third quarter which they were able to lean on in the fourth quarter before securing a 71-67 victory.
The freshmen tandem of Josie Storey and Anaya Brown had big games against TSU by each securing new career-highs offensively. Storey led the game with a career-high 18 points – knocking down six three-pointers – while Brown was close on her trail with 17 points and six rebounds. Joining in the action, Shae Littleford posted her eighth consecutive game in double figures with 10 points.
Southern Indiana enters the contest with an 8-8 record while boasting a 2-3 mark in its debut season in the OVC. USI is one of three programs competing in the OVC for the first time in the 2022-23 season while also making the substantial leap up from the Division II ranks.
The Screaming Eagles feature a well-balanced offense with three of the league's top seven scorers. USI features three players which are averaging over 13.0 points per game with Hannah Haithcock leading the way and ranking third in the conference with 14.6 points per game. Trailing close behind is the tandem of Meredith Raley (13.4 ppg) and Vanessa Shafford (13.1 ppg) which rank sixth and seventh, respectively, amongst OVC offensive leaders.
Saturday's contest marks the first meeting between the two programs.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will have the call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
