The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team opens a three-game road swing with a trip to Music City for an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against Tennessee State on Thursday, Jan. 12. Tipoff from the Gentry Center is slated for 5:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-9, 2-2 OVC) hit the road after enjoying a three-game homestand in which the squad won two of three contests. In the team's most recent outing, UT Martin came up short after injuries continued to rare its head as Tennessee Tech came out on top 61-49 behind a 28-point second quarter.
Freshman forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks earned her fourth OVC Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 77.8 percent from the floor. While playing limited minutes in the last matchup, Currie-Jelks posted 30 points and 13 rebounds in the team's win over Southeast Missouri last Thursday.
Fellow freshman Anaya Brown is in the midst of a strong stretch after reaching double figures in the scoring column in five of the last six contests. Along with scoring a team-high 13 points while notching nine rebounds against Tennessee Tech, Brown is averaging 10.6 points and 7.8 rebounds during her scoring streak.
Tennessee State (6-9, 1-3 OVC) picked up its first win in league play after clawing out a 79-74 victory against Lindenwood on Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak. Newcomer Erica Haynes-Overton (14.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg) has played a big role for the Lady Tigers by earning her third OVC Newcomer of the Week honor along with garnering OVC Player of the Week honors after averaging 25.0 points last week. Sophomore Gia Adams is also a top contributor with 14.5 points per game. The tandem currently ranks third and fourth, respectively, on the league's scoring leaderboard.
Thursday's contest marks the 68th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 38-29 series advantage. UT Martin has won 15 of the last 18 matchups against Tennessee State despite splitting the 2021-22 season series.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will have the call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
