SKYHAWKS OPEN OVC VOLLEYBALL SLATE WITH HOME SHOWDOWN AGAINST TENNESSEE STATE TOMORROW

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team plays host to Tennessee State in the first Ohio Valley Conference match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at Skyhawk Fieldhouse. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
UT Martin owns a 37-17 all-time record against its in-state league rival, including a 20-6 mark inside Skyhawk Fieldhouse. Overall, UT Martin has won six consecutive decisions over the Tigers, having not lost to Tennessee State since Oct. 24, 2015.
The Skyhawks have additionally performed well in OVC openers at home, winning their last six such matches. UT Martin has not lost an OVC opener in Skyhawk Fieldhouse since 2007.
Several Skyhawks have performed well against the Tigers in their careers, led by Logan Wallick and Karen Scanlon. Wallick has accounted for 49 kills (4.08 per set) on a .311 hitting percentage in three career matches against Tennessee State, including a career-best 24-kill performance on Oct. 26, 2019. Scanlon has slammed down 43 kills on a .294 attack percentage in four career outings against the Tigers, including a 15-kill, 24-dig effort on Nov. 12, 2021.
UT Martin (6-7) tops the OVC in attack percentage (.194), assists (11.28 per set) and service aces (2.00 per set). Scanlon ranks fifth in the league with a .285 hitting percentage while her 2.93 kills per set average ranks sixth. Wallick ranks seventh in attack percentage (.279) and kills (2.81 per set) while Haeleigh Paulino is fifth in service aces (0.43 per set) and sixth in assists (6.63 per set). The Skyhawk defensive attack has been guided by Angel Baylark (1.09 blocks per set, third-most in the OVC) and Dylan Mott (4.04 digs per set, sixth-best mark in the OVC).
Tennessee State (6-7) enters this matchup as winners of four straight, sweeping through its own Tiger Invitational tournament over the weekend. Tennessee State dropped only one set in the event, making short work out of Belmont (3-0), Bethune-Cookman (3-0), Alcorn State (3-0) and North Alabama (3-1).
The Tiger offense boasts OVC hitting percentage leader Kennedy Davis (.361) while Johanna Alcantara (3.64 kills per set) and Carla Boudal (0.56 service aces per set) both rank second in the league in their respective statistical categories. Tennessee State's 15.31 digs per set average ranks second in the OVC, paced by Gina Rivera-Ortiz (5.14 digs per set). Rivera-Ortiz has snagged 86 digs (5.06 per set) in four career matches against UT Martin, including 37 scoops on Nov. 12, 2021.
