MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off a successful opening weekend that saw the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad nab a tournament championship, the Skyhawks open a busy home week with a Tuesday, Aug. 30 matchup against Southern Illinois. First serve is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Tomorrow marks the first of four consecutive UT Martin matches inside Skyhawk Fieldhouse. UT Martin will look to replicate its home success from last season as its 8-2 record was the program's best since the 2002 squad went 12-0.
The Skyhawks are fresh off a 2-1 weekend at the Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky., narrowly falling in five sets to Radford before bouncing back for wins over IUPUI (3-2) and tournament host Eastern Kentucky (3-1). UT Martin nearly doubled up its opponents in service aces (29 to 15) during the three matches while rejecting 1.93 blocks per set – directly leading to a .149 opponent hitting percentage.
Three Skyhawks were named to the Colonel Classic all-tournament team, highlighted by tournament Most Valuable Player Karen Scanlon. The graduate student lived up to her Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference expectations, leading the squad in kills (39), service aces (seven) and points (49.5). Dylan Mott (68 digs, 4.86 per set) and Haeleigh Paulino (78 assists, 28 digs) also secured a spot on the all-tournament team after spectacular performances.
Preseason All-OVC honoree Logan Wallick guided UT Martin in kills per set (2.89) and hitting percentage (.323) over the weekend while Angel Baylark rejected 18 blocks (1.50 per set) – 12 of which came in the tournament championship match against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Kambree Lucas also gave the Skyhawks a spark in the matchup against Eastern Kentucky, delivering a career-best 16 kills on a .429 attack percentage to go along with a career-high seven blocks.
UT Martin has faced Southern Illinois 13 times in its NCAA Division I history and has won two of the three decisions inside Skyhawk Fieldhouse. This marks the first time that UT Martin has hosted the Salukis since 2014 and is the fourth time in the last five seasons that these two sides have met (each of the three outings since 2018 have gone into five sets).
Wallick has performed well against Southern Illinois in her career, collecting 27 kills (2.70 per set) on a .264 hitting percentage over two matches. Scanlon has also posted 20 kills on a .259 attack percentage with 1.11 blocks per set in a pair of matchups while Lucas (team-best 13 kills) and Paulino (double-double of 21 assists, 13 digs) stood out in last year's outing in Carbondale.
The Salukis hosted their own tournament during the first weekend of the 2022 campaign, falling to a pair of common opponents with the Skyhawks. Southern Illinois dropped a five-set decision to OVC member SIUE on Friday before a 3-1 setback to Grambling State on Saturday.
Tatum Tornatta led the Salukis in kills (29, 3.22 per set) and hitting percentage (.375) over the weekend while Anna Jaworski's 68 assists and Peyton Plant's six service aces also paced Southern Illinois offensively. The Saluki defensive attack was guided along by Claudia Bobb (29 digs, 3.22 per set) and Imani Hartfield (10 blocks, 1.11 per set). Last season, Nataly Garcia (22 kills, .333 attack percentage, 10 digs, six blocks) and Tornatta (16 kills with one error, .556 hitting percentage) fueled Southern Illinois during the slim win against UT Martin.
