CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field program received a pair of event victories from Cole Davis and Brady Fry to highlight its performance at the Lake Stride Joey Haines Invitational held at Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo. this afternoon.
The Skyhawks traveled to the Show Me State for their second outdoor track meet of the season and came back with a pair of event victories and several standout performances. When the final points were tallied, UT Martin's men finished the meet in fifth place (73 points) while the women's squad sat in ninth (nine points).
The day's notable performances began with a strong showing in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Freshman Sam Shuman posted a collegiate best time in the event and finished second overall with a mark of 9:42.81 – ranking as the fastest OVC competitor in the field.
Then the Skyhawks posted their first event title of the afternoon in the men's 1500m run when Davis led a strong UT Martin contingent which finished in seven of the top nine spots. Davis's time of 3:57.38 just missed his previous PR by less than a minute but was good enough for his first individual title in his collegiate career. Trailing close behind was freshman teammate Will Cahill with a runner-up finish after posting a mark of 3:59.49 for a new PR.
In the women's 1500m, freshman Annie Amundsen narrowly missed out on a top-three finish after posting a time of 4:47.85. The mark set a new PR for the youngster while finishing fourth in the field.
UT Martin picked up its second individual title of the afternoon in the 110 hurdles in a rematch of the 2022 OVC Indoor Championship 60m hurdles between the Skyhawks' Fry and Southeast Missouri's Anthony Forrest. With Forrest narrowly edging Fry by less than a hundredth of a second in the event finals in Birmingham, Fry got his revenge in the 110m hurdles today by winning with a time of 14.64 seconds.
Sophomore Janay Chapman snuck into scoring position with a strong performance in the third heat of the women's 400m dash. Chapman finished second in her section with a time of 59.7 seconds for a new PR which was good enough for eighth place overall in the field. Freshman Sanaa Smith also posted a PR in the event with a time of 1:02.68, finishing third in second two.
Dual-sport athlete JaMichael McGoy also boasted another strong showing in the men's 100m dash by posting a PR time of 10.83 second to narrowly miss the top-three despite winning his heat.
UT Martin will return to action on Friday, Apr. 8 when traveling to Cleveland, Tenn. for the Flames Invitational.
