MARTIN, Tenn. – Welcoming their third opponent at home in 2022 for what is also the third of seven matches inside Ohio Valley Conference territory, the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad battles last season's league champion Southeast Missouri in 24 hours with a 1:00 p.m. first serve against the Redhawks in Martin.
Coming off perhaps their most impressive weekend of the semester, UTM awaits tomorrow's bout with SEMO having grabbed their first conference W in a second attempt over Eastern Illinois, coming less than a full day after pushing powerhouse SIUE to the brink in the OVC opener. Pulling off a clean sweep of the conference's weekly awards slate, junior Aziza Aubin was selected as the OVC Player of the Week for the second time in the month of March behind her current eight-match individual winning streak, while Aubin and doubles partner Amelia Campbell were simultaneously chosen as the league's Team of the Week on the same day with back-to-back two-on-two victories in Illinois last weekend.
Hoping to keep their momentum rolling after their second win in a row over EIU at a neutral venue, the Skyhawks will host a Southeast Missouri club riding an impressive wave of victories themselves. Sporting an overall record of 10-4 – with a 2-0 start to OVC play against the same two schools UTM has already competed against – the Redhawks have emerged as the victors in their last four appearances, most recently a 4-3 triumph over SIUE to hand the Cougars just their second loss of the year.
Serving as the first match between conference foes a year ago, SEMO's 6-1 decision in Martin was the first step in the Redhawks' undefeated OVC path that eventually landed at 7-0, the unanimous regular season champion and top seed in the league tournament. However, they were bested in the OVC title match by second-seeded Austin Peay in a 4-3 thriller from Evansville.
Aiming for redemption against Southeast Missouri following 2021's result, the Skyhawks will enact hosting duties for just the third time this spring after a 1-1 weekend against Missouri State and Chattanooga nearly four weeks back. Once Saturday's bout has concluded, UT Martin will split their final four matches of the regular season between home and away status.
Tomorrow's contest will mark a bit of a reunion for SEMO head coach Mary Beth Gunn, a former All-OVC star for the Skyhawks during her collegiate stint in 2007. After graduating from UTM on a master's degree in Education, Gunn undertook an assistant coaching gig with the Skyhawks that led to an OVC regular season championship in 2011.
