WACO, Texas – The National Collegiate Equestrian Association unveiled its last top-10 poll of the regular season this afternoon as the University of Tennessee at Martin was bumped up to No. 9 following a pair of home victories over the weekend.
The top three and bottom two positions were shaken up in this week's rankings. Oklahoma State reclaimed the No. 1 spot and was followed by Auburn at No. 2 and Texas A&M at No. 3. TCU (No. 4), Georgia (No. 5), Baylor (No. 6), SMU (No. 7) and Fresno State (No. 8) remained in the same order while the Skyhawks improved to No. 9 and UC Davis entered the poll at No. 10.
UT Martin is coming off a dominant weekend at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion, defeating South Dakota State (14-6) and Minnesota-Crookston (15-1) in back-to-back days. The Skyhawks were responsible for seven combined MOP's and swept all nine points in fences in the two matches, tacking on seven wins in both Western events (horsemanship and reining) while adding six victories in flat.
Katelyn Schultz (horsemanship) and Kelby Kane (fences, flat) each secured a pair of MOP's apiece to pace UT Martin. Julia Gilman and Aubrey Malone also earned top honors in fences and reining, respectively, on Friday against South Dakota State while Logan Putvinski nabbed MOP accolades in reining against Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday.
The trio of Kelby Kane, Haley Kane and Emmy Reed each posted a pair of victories in fences during the weekend, leading a half-dozen Skyhawks who won their head-to-head matchups in that event. Five total riders were awarded wins in flat, guided by a pair of victories out of Gilman.
Schultz, Emma Schaefer and Keely Seiter all added a pair of horsemanship triumphs to their season tallies as part of four UT Martin representatives to claim points in that event. Five separate Skyhawks emerged victorious in reining, led by a pair of wins apiece from Malone and Kate Davis.
UT Martin now prepares for the 2022 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship, which is scheduled for March 24-26 in Harrington, Del.
