DANBURY, Conn. – After successful showings in the University of Tennessee at Martin's opening weekend of the spring season, Kelby Kane (fences) and Sophia Sundem (flat) have nabbed Eastern College Athletic Conference Rider of the Week honors.
The Skyhawks have now brought home nine ECAC Rider of the Week awards in 2021-22. Today's announcement marks the third fences honor for Kane (who also won on Oct. 5 and Nov. 16) while Sundem becomes the sixth different UT Martin representative (third in flat) to win an ECAC weekly award this season.
These two helped direct the No. 9 ranked Skyhawks through a challenging gauntlet of ranked opponents as UT Martin faced No. 6 SMU, No. 7 Delaware State and No. 10 TCU in back-to-back-to-back days (Jan. 27-29).
Kane put together three straight wins in flat, moving her season record out to a perfect 9-0. The senior from Lexington, Ky. produced an 81 against SMU on Thursday, an 84 against Delaware State on Friday and an 82 in Saturday's weekend finale against TCU. She topped her head-to-head competitors by an average of seven points per meet.
In fences, Kane ranks first on the squad in victories (nine), MOP's (three) and scoring average (81.7).
Sundem made the most out of her collegiate debut last week, producing solid scores all around in flat. Her best outing came on Friday against Delaware State, capturing MOP accolades after an 82.5-point performance (winning by a margin of eight points against her head-to-head opponent). She also added 69 points against SMU on Thursday and a 73.5-point effort against TCU on Saturday.
A sophomore out of Carlsbad, Calif., Sundem ranks third on the Skyhawks in scoring average (75.0) in the flat event.
UT Martin returns home for its next two meets, hosting UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 11 and current No. 1 Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
