UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS CAPS OFF HOMESTAND WITH REMATCH AGAINST BELMONT
2/6/2022 7:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team looks to end its season-long four-game homestand on a positive note when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont on Monday, Feb. 7. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Monday's game marks the second meeting between the two teams this season after previously squaring off in Nashville back on Jan. 29. While UT Martin jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, Belmont controlled the tempo of the game for the final three periods as the Skyhawks ran out of gas and saw their shot attempts fall short resulting in a 73-48 road loss.
Both programs have reigned supreme in the OVC over the past decade by combining to win or share 10 regular season titles since 2011-12 while securing nine of the last 11 tournament championships. The Skyhawks are owners of six regular season crowns and four tournament championships while the Bruins have claimed four season titles and five tournament trophies during their respective runs of dominance.
The Skyhawks (7-14, 4-6 OVC) enter the contest hot off back-to-back wins over the weekend against Southeast Missouri and Tennessee State. In the team's most recent matchup against TSU, UT Martin picked up a 55-46 victory after notching new season highs by forcing the Lady Tigers into 29 turnovers and tallying 17 steals. The pair of victories marked the first set of back-to-back wins since the opening week of the season when knocking off North Carolina A&T and Western Kentucky in the Preseason WNIT.
Belmont (13-7, 9-2 OVC) is riding a three-game winning streak into the matchup after picking up consecutive wins over UT Martin, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech to move into sole possession of first place in the league standings. The Bruins have been impressive by leading the league in both scoring offense (74.3 ppg) and scoring defense (53.5 ppg) against conference opponents while beating teams by an average of 20.7 points per game.
The Bruins feature three players averaging in double figures in the scoring column. Preseason Player of the Year Destinee Wells paces the squad with 15.7 points and 4.8 assists per game while Madison Bartley (11.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Tuti Jones (11.6 ppg, 2.8 spg) joins in the action.
The two programs have met 40 times previously with Belmont holding a 26-14 advantage in the series. The Skyhawks have found success against the Bruins inside the Elam Center by winning the last three games played in Martin since 2019.
Chris Brinkley will have the call live on ESPN+ as well as locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
