SKYHAWK MEN'S HOOPS AIM FOR SEASON SWEEP OF TENNESSEE STATE IN OVC SHOWDOWN AT THE ELAM CENTER
2/4/2022 2:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will look to replicate its recent home success against Tennessee State when it hosts the in-state Ohio Valley Conference rival on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the 1 p.m. women's basketball contest.
The Skyhawks (8-15, 4-7 OVC) have won five consecutive home matchups against the Tigers, having not lost to Tennessee State at home in over a decade (since Jan. 26, 2012).
In the first meeting between these two squads, the Skyhawks earned a 94-78 triumph on Jan. 6 in Nashville. Bernie Andre poured in a season-best 24 points and was joined in double figures by KJ Simon (21 points, career-high five blocks), Mikel Henderson (13 points, four assists, three steals), Chris Nix (12 points) and Josh Endicott (12 points) as UT Martin set a season-high in scoring against a NCAA Division I opponent.
The Skyhawks are coming off an 84-63 triumph over Southeast Missouri on Thursday. Simon generated a game-high 19 points in just 17 minutes of playing time while Henderson drained five treys on his way to 17 points. Andre (14 points, 12 rebounds) hauled in his fourth double-double in the last five games while Nix and KK Curry each provided 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks apiece.
This matchup features the top two free throw shooting squads in the OVC in league play. The Tigers (9-14, 4-7) have sunk 75.4 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe while UT Martin has knocked down 73.5 percent of its tries. A key factor to this contest could come on the glass as the Skyhawks rank second in the league in offensive rebounding (12.9 per game) and Tennessee State leads the OVC in defensive rebounding (31.1 per game) in conference play.
Carlos Marshall, Jr. has been a thorn in UT Martin's side in his career, averaging 25.0 points while shooting 66.7 percent (12-for-18) from three-point range in two career games against the Skyhawks.
Chris Brinkley will have the call live on ESPN+ as well as locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
