The 2021-22 regular season will come to a close on Saturday, Feb. 26 for the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team with a road matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech. Tipoff from the Eblen Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The programs rank as two of the most tradition-rich teams in OVC history as Tennessee Tech has won 18 regular season championships while UT Martin claimed seven. This season the Golden Eagles are looking to claim the No. 2 seed in next weeks OVC Basketball Championship with a win while a victory for the Skyhawks would put them in contention for the No. 5 seed.
The Skyhawks (12-16, 9-8 OVC) went on the road Thursday night and came away with a 70-49 victory at Southeast Missouri. UT Martin never trailed in the win while tallying 17 steals and forcing 21 turnovers. Four different players scored in double figures for the Skyhawks for the third time this season with Holly Forbes leading the way with 19 points and six rebounds while Paige Pipkin (14), Raegan Johnson (11) and Ella Thompson (10) also reached double-digits.
Tennessee Tech (18-9, 13-4 OVC) currently holds a one-game lead for the second seed in the upcoming OVC tournament over Murray State which would carry with it a valuable double bye into the semifinals. The Golden Eagles are led by Anna Jones who paces the team in both scoring (13.7 ppg) and rebounds (7.2 rpg) while fellow graduate forward Mackenzie Coleman is adding 11.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
The two teams previously met back on Jan. 31 in Martin with Tennessee Tech picking up a 67-56 road victory for the second straight season. Jones put on a show for the Golden Eagles with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Pipkin (16), Kyannah Grant (11) and Seygan Robins (11) ranked as the top scorers for the Skyhawks.
Saturday's game marks the 77th meeting between the two programs with Tennessee Tech holding a 50-26 advantage. UT Martin has held its own in the recent history however, posting a 13-5 mark against TTU under the direction of the OVC's active wins leader Kevin McMillan (252).
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Brandon Burke (analyst) will have the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
