UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS OPENS FINAL WEEK OF SEASON AT SEMO ON THURSDAY
2/23/2022 8:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team enters the final week of the regular season with a last two-game road swing beginning with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri on Thursday, Feb. 24. Tipoff from the Show Me Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
With an OVC Basketball Championship berth secured, the only thing left to decide for UT Martin is its seed for next week's tournament. The Skyhawks currently sit in sixth place in the league standings, trailing Eastern Illinois by a game for the fifth seed and holding a two-game lead over both SIUE and Tennessee State for the seventh seed.
The Skyhawks (11-16, 8-8 OVC) suffered a speed bump on an otherwise impressive stretch through the month of February in their most recent contest. UT Martin could not slow down a hot-shooting Murray State squad which raced away with a 69-56 victory. Despite the setback, the Skyhawks won six of their last eight contests.
UT Martin will turn to the guard duo of Paige Pipkin and Shae Littleford to carry a heavy load in the contest. Pipkin leads the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game and tallied a game-high 19 points in the team's previous matchup against the Redhawks earlier this month. Littleford, a two-time OVC Freshman of the Week, averages 10.8 points per game and has reached double figures in 11 of her last 17 games.
Southeast Missouri (6-21, 2-14 OVC) has been eliminated from postseason consideration but recently snapped a six-game losing streak with an eight-point victory (70-62) against Morehead State on Saturday. The Redhawks feature two players who score in double figures including Deanay Watson (11.2 ppg) and Taelour Pruitt (10.5 ppg).
This marks the 76th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 43-32 record in the series dating back to 1977. The Skyhawks have won 10 of the last 12 meetings, including a Feb. 3 matchup in Martin by a score of 70-66 which sparked the team's current turnaround.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Brandon Burke (analyst) will have the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
