UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS TO HOST MURRAY STATE FOR SENIOR DAY ON SATURDAY
2/18/2022 6:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to put the finishing touches on a successful closing stretch to the regular season when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Saturday, Feb. 19. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Shortly before tipoff, UT Martin will honor Emma Davis, Holly Forbes and Kyannah Grant as part of Senior Day festivities. Davis enters the contest having played in 76 games throughout her four-year Skyhawk career while scoring 132 points while knocking down 35.4 percent of her three-point attempts. Forbes joined the Skyhawks this season as a graduate transfer from Robert Morris and has started in 21 games this year while averaging 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Grant has played a vital role for UT Martin over the past four years with 102 games played and 50 starts while totaling 501 points, 229 assists, 160 rebounds and 90 steals in her career.
UT Martin and Murray State previously met back on Jan. 22 in Murray as the Skyhawks played with a depleted roster featuring only seven available players following a 16-day layoff. The Skyhawks stayed in the contest early by committing just six turnovers but ultimately could not withstand a full stable of Racers which shot 56.1 percent from the field and ran away with the 65-49 victory.
The Skyhawks (11-15, 8-7 OVC) have since found their footing by winning four straight games and six of their last seven contests to climb into sixth place. Most recently UT Martin picked up a 54-36 win against Morehead State to wrap up a stretch which saw the team play 12 games in 25 days by holding their ninth opponent below 40 points during the Division I era.
Reigning OVC Freshman of the Week Shae Littleford picked up where she left off last week by scoring a career-high 21 points in the win over Morehead State on Monday evening while knocking down four three-pointers. Junior Paige Pipkin also scored in double figures with 10 points while snatching six rebounds and tallying four steals.
Murray State (19-7, 11-4 OVC) sits one win out of first place with three games to play after winning seven of its last eight contests. The Racers feature one of the favorites for OVC Player of the Year in Katelyn Young who leads the league in points (20.0 ppg) and rebounds (8.0 rpg) along with three other players averaging in double figures including Macey Turley (14.1 ppg), Hannah McKay (12.4 ppg) and Alexis Burpo (10.7 ppg).
UT Martin leads the all-time series 58-36 despite the loss earlier this season. The Skyhawks have excelled at home against the Racers, winning 31-of 46 matchups.
Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) will have the call live on ESPN+ as well as locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
