UT MARTIN MEN'S HOOPS PLAYS HOST TO OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE-LEADING NO. 21 MURRAY STATE ON SENIOR DAY
2/18/2022 11:18:00 AM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – For just the second time in the history of University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball, the Skyhawks host a nationally ranked opponent when the No. 21 Murray State Racers visit the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, Feb. 19. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's game as part of a doubleheader).
UT Martin last hosted a top-25 foe on Feb. 4, 2012 when No. 10 Murray State squeaked out a 65-58 win. The 2021-22 version of the Racers entered the national polls for the first time last week and lead the nation with a .926 winning percentage.
The Skyhawks (8-19, 4-11 Ohio Valley Conference) are in search of a season split against Murray State as the Racers won by a slim 74-66 margin on Jan. 22. Bernie Andre (17 points, 11 rebounds), KJ Simon (16 points) and KK Curry (10 points) each scored in double figures for UT Martin, who has been the only OVC team to stay within single digits of Murray State at home this season.
On Wednesday, the Skyhawks led for over 33 minutes but fell victim to a late comeback in a tough 68-60 loss to defending OVC champion Morehead State. Curry collected a career-best 24 points for UT Martin, who suffered its first setback of the season when leading with five minutes remaining (was previously 8-0).
Shortly before tipoff, Skyhawk graduate transfers Andre and Darius Simmons will be recognized as part of Senior Day festivities. Andre enters this game with 995 career points at the Division I level (having also played at Northern Arizona from 2018-20 and FIU in 2020-21) while Simmons has scored 1,352 career collegiate points (playing his first four seasons at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne).
Murray State (25-2, 15-0 OVC) is one of just three Division I squads who are currently undefeated in conference play (alongside No. 1 Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference and South Dakota State in the Summit League). In the Racers' last game, OVC scoring leader KJ Williams tossed in 25 points in 23 minutes to guide six double-digit scorers in a 91-56 home triumph over Austin Peay on Thursday.
Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) will call the game live on ESPN+ and locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, in addition to a link to live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
