2/15/2022 8:15:00 AM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – The last homestand of the 2021-22 University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball campaign starts with a Wednesday, Feb. 16 tilt against the Morehead State Eagles. The "Code Orange" matchup is set to begin at 8 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's basketball game as part of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader).
The all-time series between these two schools has been very competitive in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center as the Eagles hold a slim 13-11 advantage in games played in Martin. Dating back to 2015, three of the last four Skyhawk home contests against Morehead State have been decided by four points or less - including a pair of overtime thrillers.
UT Martin (8-18, 4-10 OVC) is in search of a season split over the Eagles as the Skyhawks fell 76-62 at Morehead State on Jan. 12. KJ Simon scored 11 points for UT Martin while his starting backcourt mate Koby Jeffries finished with nine points and a career-best six steals for the Skyhawks, who led for over 13 minutes in the first half but fell victim to a 60.9 percent shooting effort by the Eagles over the final 20 minutes.
Despite big performances out of Simon (21 points, career-best five assists) and Bernie Andre (15 points, 11 rebounds, career-high four assists), UT Martin fell in its last outing - an 82-70 decision at Eastern Illinois. It marked the ninth 20-plus point performance of the season by Simon while Andre's five double-doubles (all occurring in the last eight games) rank third in the OVC in league play.
Morehead State (19-8, 11-3 OVC) lost a pair of games last week - to the only two teams above them in the OVC standings - by a combined five points (48-47 at Belmont, 57-53 to No. 21 Murray State). The Eagles tops the OVC in field goal percentage defense (.390), three-point field goal percentage defense (.267), blocked shots (5.6 per contest) and three-point field goal percentage (.369) in league play.
Johni Broome - who collected 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks against the Skyhawks on Jan. 12 - is averaging 17.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 4.3 blocks against league opposition this year.
Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) will handle broadcasting duties live on ESPN+ and locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
