SKYHAWKS OPEN THREE-GAME HOMESTAND WITH VALENTINE’S DAY MATCHUP AGAINST AUSTIN PEAY
2/13/2022 8:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team opens its final homestand of the season with three straight games, beginning with a Valentine's Day matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Monday, Feb. 14. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Monday's matchup marks the 13th Valentine's Day contest for UT Martin in program history with the squad boasting a 5-7 record. The Skyhawks and Governors met on this date back in 2015 with UT Martin picking up a 91-63 victory over Austin Peay.
The Skyhawks (9-15, 6-7 OVC) have found success over the last two weeks by picking up four wins in their last five contests. In the team's most recent outing, UT Martin went on the road and earned a 58-45 at Eastern Illinois after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the first half and posted a dominating third quarter effort. The Skyhawks outscored the Panthers 19-2 in the third quarter while holding the home squad to a 7.1 shooting percentage in the period.
Freshman Shae Littleford posted a nice outing in a return to her hometown of Charleston by scoring in double-digits for the 11th time this season with 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals in the twin. Sophomore Seygan Robins also continued her impressive play by reaching double figures for the sixth time in the last seven games with 14 points off the bench – knocking down four three-pointers – while tallying five rebounds and four assists.
UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan boasts a career record of 249-157 and sits just one win away from his 250th career victory. Once McMillan reaches the approaching benchmark, he will become just the sixth basketball coach in OVC history (men's or women's) to notch 250 wins.
Austin Peay (17-6, 10-3 OVC) currently sits third in the league standings with two weeks to play after winning eight of its last nine games. The Govs enter the game riding a four-game winning streak and boast two of the league's top scorers in transfers Yamia Johnson (Jacksonville State) and Karle Pace (Eastern Illinois). Johnson ranks as arguably the league's best sixth-man by averaging 15.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game off the bench. Pace contributes nearly identical numbers with 15.6 points per game while adding 58 assists on the year.
The two teams previously met in their respectively OVC openers back on Dec. 30 with UT Martin picking up a 70-62 road victory. The Skyhawks boast an eight-game winning streak over the Govs in the series while going 21-5 under the direction of McMillan.
Chris Brinkley will have the call live on ESPN+ as well as locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
